True Story

“Come on!  Come on!  Come on!”  Janis sang at the top of her lungs.  She released her twists from the tight bun at the top of her head, banging her head up and down like a rock star, her locks flowing all around her like a halo.  “Take another little piece of my heart now BAB-YYYYY!!!”

She spent all day sitting in a tight cubicle next to the water cooler, entering endless figures and formulas on spreadsheets.  Answering phones.  Responding to emails.  A robot.  The accountants for whom she worked had no idea, underneath her nondescript gray pantsuits lived a modern-day flower child.

“Take another little piece of my heart now darlin’!!!”  She heard laughter from below and realized that she’d left her window open.  She was putting on a show for the whole neighborhood.  Not at all flustered, she rushed to the window and opened it wider, continuing to sing into the street as her neighbors shook their heads and laughed.  These few minutes every night, her impromptu solo dance parties, kept her alive.

  1. Love Janis Joplin! I used to babysit for this woman when I was 13 and 14, we would spend the summers at the Cape and she would play Janis’ album (dating myself) everyday…I knew all the words to all the songs…thanks for the memories. Your story is very creative, descriptive and smart! Fun read…
